The Competition Commission has said that nine private hospitals should be sold in order to increase competition in the healthcare sector. Its decision is not yet final, but has provisionally said that there are problems in some areas where there are clusters of private hospitals owned
by the same operator. HCA, BMI and Spire are by far the biggest players in the market. The Commission is consulting on its proposals before it issues its final decision.
